Voluntary Social Year (VSY)
Before you apply for a VSY position with us, you should have already completed school. As a rule, you will then be assigned to a nursing area for a period of one year. During this time, you will become an important part of the nursing team. VSY placements are possible on all wards with beds, for example in geriatrics, neurosurgery or cardiology.
The most important at a glance
- The minimum age for school trainees is 15 years old
- An internship is possible if a complete measles and hepatitis B vaccination can be proven and a medical certificate stating that the internship is harmless is submitted. Ask your family physician about this. If you are accepted for an internship, we will send you a form for this certificate.
- For organisational reasons, we should receive your application at least 3 months before the start of the internship, because if you have to catch up on a hepatitis B vaccination, the build-up of the vaccination protection requires this time.
- The minimum duration for a school internship is 14 days (at least 2 x 5 days - Monday-Friday)
- Unfortunately, shadowing days/ girls days/ boys days are not possible
- School year trainees must provide a current certificate of good conduct
- You should have already completed your school education.

- An orientation internship should last at least two weeks and can extend over a maximum of 90 days.
- An internship for students of human medicine can last between a minimum of 30 and a maximum of 90 days. When applying, please include a cover letter, a CV, a copy of the last school report and the currently valid certificate of enrolment.
- The minimum age for a VSY is 16 years, the maximum age is 26 years
- A VSY is possible if a complete measles and hepatitis B vaccination can be proven and a medical certificate is submitted stating that the internship or VSY is harmless. Ask your family physician about this. If you are accepted for an internship, we shall send you a form for this certificate.
- For organisational reasons, we should receive your application at least 3 months before the start of the VSY, because if you need to catch up on a hepatitis B vaccination, it takes this time to build up the vaccination protection.
- All VSYs must provide a current certificate of good conduct.
Recruitment for a VSY is handled by the Bremen branch of the German Red Cross (DRK).You can find out more about the VSY and the application process on the DRK Bremen website here. Please also send your application for a VSY to the DRK via the channels indicated there.
Please send us your application preferably by e-mail to pflege@klinikum-bremerhaven.de or in writing by regular mail (without a folder, please). Please indicate the desired period or duration of the internship and enclose your CV and a copy of your last school report. Please understand that incomplete applications cannot be processed. After completion of the application process, the documents will not be returned, but will be destroyed by us in compliance with data protection regulations.
Of course, you can specify your preferred specialty or ward - we shall try to take your wishes into account. Please understand that school internships are not possible in the Central Emergency Department or the delivery room.
School internships are not remunerated. The remuneration for the internship during the FOS (Secondary Technical School) is €100 per month.
